Manifestation of ADHD in adults

Even though Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD is found mostly in children adult ADHD is also a reality. Unlike childhood ADHD, symptoms in adult ADHD are quite different. These symptoms are discussed below in detail. The first one is easy distraction on part of the patient. It may be very difficult for you to complete daily chores or mundane activities due to low attention span. Another symptom says that during the course of conversation you may just zone out and talk about something completely unrelated without even realising it. If you can identify with any of the above situations, there are chances that you are suffering from Adult ADHD.

Recognising the problem

If you recognise these problems in your behaviour don’t worry. It is the first step towards the treatment. It is very easy to get labelled as lazy or stupid in public if these problems persist for a long time in your behaviour. But the fact is that it is just a disorder which can easily be cured with help of medication and therapy. You don’t need to get hassled by other’s opinion when they are not ready to understand the root cause behind it. However, if left untreated, adult ADHD can have a far reaching impact on one’s life.
A person suffering from adult ADHD may suffer from mental and physical ailments, like low self-esteem, chronic stress, compulsive eating and drug abuse. It can create problems at work as the sufferer may find it difficult to meet deadlines, sticking to routine, dealing with paperwork and generally have trouble keeping his job. Adult ADHD patients have a lot of problem at home and relationships can get strained because he might be constantly nagged to tidy up or be more responsible. In fact those suffering from adult ADHD may have violent outbursts of temper which may impact the family negatively.

Self-help in adult ADHD

Though adult ADHD is a serious problem, and needs to be cured at the earliest it should not be equated as being crazy. You have to recognise your problem all right and visit a therapist, but it is also important to help yourself. For instance you need to eat and sleep right and get enough exercise. Once you take care of your physical health, work out regularly and get enough rest it will have a calming effect on you. You have to actively work on the time management problem.
You know you have a problem in focussing, so make a set of rules for yourself. Set your own deadlines. Make as many notes for yourself even for simple tasks. Use colour coding and alarms on your phone or PC to remind you about meetings, medications, doctor appointments and things you have trouble remembering. Much as it is necessary to work on your professional problems you need to work on your personal relationships as well. Discuss your problems with family and close friends and be more vigilant and attentive during your conversations. If you make an honest effort, you will find that there are a lot of people to help you overcome Adult ADHD.
