Determining what causes ADHD

Although it is has been difficult to determine what causes ADHD there are studies that point towards some evidence on what causes ADHD. Studies have shown that ADHD has a genetic component. Just as a child is likely to have blonde hair if he comes from a family of blondes, he is also likely to inherit this disorder that may have been apparent when his father or grandfathers werechildren themselves. It is not even necessary for ADHD to be present in the direct bloodline. If any of the close relatives have had ADHD in the past there is a random chance of a child getting impacted by it.

Twin cases and head injuries

There is also the possibility of identical twins suffering from ADHD even when it is not know that what causes ADHD. There have been studies that were conducted on twins both identical and non identical. In more than 50 per cent of the cases identical twins share this behavioural disorder, while non identical twins are less likely to share the same. Also in three out of five cases, boys were seen to be more impacted by ADHD in comparison to the girls. Girls are less likely to be prone to ADHD. However medical experts say that it is not entirely impossible, and ADHD manifests slightly differently in a girl child than in a boy.
Apart from genetic and heredity other reasons for what causes ADHD are also established. It has been found that ADHD may have also been acquired by a head injury or the result of a trauma, or a serious blow on the head in some cases.Epilepsy in children may also be a reason to answer the question what causes ADHD. Cases have been seen that expecting mother’s exposure to alcohol or nicotine has also led to ADHD cases in new born babies. The exposure to alcohol and nicotine during pregnancy has a negative impact on the foetus and may be the reason behind what causes ADHD in new burns. In fact the impact of exposure to such chemicals can bring about severe complications during childbirth which may lead to premature delivery.

Busting myths for what causes ADHD

Although it has been difficult to establish the real reason behind what causes ADHD, there are several studies that are going around the world to find its root cause. Currently there are many myths among individuals about ADHD. Nobody can deny the fact that ADHD is a serious problem and needs to be addressed at the earliest but it does not justify craziness. A child suffering from ADHD should not be labelled as lazy, stupid, or inattentive.
Teachers and parents alike have to be sympathetic to the problems of the child and have to assist him with his daily activities. If you are a parent whose child has been diagnosed with ADHD, do not blame yourself for it. It is not a result of poor parenting or problems at home. It is important for to realise this and face it practically. You don’t need to pinpoint what causes ADHD, instead try to help your child overcome it.
