Attention
Deficit Hyperactive Disorder or ADHD in children is rather common behavioral disorder.
If a child below seven years of age has a problem concentrating on school work,
is especially restless, inattentive or is simply difficult to control, chances
are that the child is suffering from ADHD. Also in most cases ADHD is likely to
manifest in boys than in girls.
The
symptoms of ADHD in children are inattentiveness, hyperactivity and
impulsiveness. Almost all children display some or all of these symptoms at some
point of time or the other, so it is not correct to label all naughty children
as ADHD patients. Symptoms of ADHD in children manifest mostly in school so the
onus lies of primary school teachers to look out for early signs.
ADHD in children noticed in school
If you are
a teacher you may find that there is a child in class who often turns up with
unfinished homework, does not respond when spoken to, loses his stuff often or
does just the opposite of what the other children are doing in class. You may be
looking at a child with ADHD. Before you label him as lazy or stupid, and scold
him repeatedly, watch out for how long this has been happening. If it comes to
a point where his school work is suffering to a large extent for a prolonged
period, you should notify his parents about ADHD in children.
As a
parent if you are notified that your child may be suffering from a behavioural
disorder don’t become defensive or jump to conclusions all at once. ADHD in
children is a disorder that is quite a common occurrence and is completely
curable. So there is no reason to get upset or worried. Meet his teacher and
find out what are his problems at school.
What parents can do when they find ADHD in children?
You may
already be aware of his problems and may be chiding him for being untidy and careless.
It is not going to be easy to control your temper when the child does something
wrong repeatedly, but you have to be sensitive to the fact that he is having
problems with his motor activities. You have to take him to a good therapist
and apart from the medication that has to be given to him regularly; you have
to regulate his daily activities.
It’s best
to take the child’s teacher into confidence. That way she will be sensitive to
his needs and be more attentive to him. You also have to take care of his diet
and give him plenty of fibre and ensure he gets enough rest. Chalk out a daily
schedule for him and create an environment where there are not too many
distractions. If you are making plans that involve the child see that they
don’t change at the last moment. While you have to be firm with the child and set
rules and boundaries for him, it is also important to reward and praise him
adequately. With love and support ADHD in children can be cured completely.
