If you
have trouble getting your child to concentrate because he is too active and
finds it difficult to pay attention, chances are he is displaying ADHD symptoms.Attention
Deficit Hyperactive Disorder or ADHD is a common childhood behavioral disorder
and is diagnosed in 3-5 per cent of school going children below the age of
seven. It is also likely to be found more in boys than in girls. Of course it
is normal for every kid to day dream once in a while or
to show up in school with incomplete homework or just be naughty at school. But
if this is a recurrent problem and impacts school work on a daily basis, you
may have a problem of ADHD symptoms at hand.
Problems at school in recognizing ADHD symptoms
The three
major ADHD symptoms are lack of attention, impulsive behavior and
hyperactivity. A teacher in primary school is most likely to notice these
symptoms in a child. He may be showing signs of inattentiveness like not keeping
focus in class during a task or an activity, losing things often, gets easily
distracted and does not seem to listen when spoken to. He may also be
displaying signs of hyperactivity and the teacher may be finding it difficult
to control him. Even when other children are asked to sit quietly, the child
with the ADHD disorder may be squirming in his seat or leaves his seat when the
remaining children are still seated. This if happen frequently is one of the
major ADHD symptoms.
There are
also signs of impassivity that can be noted in children with ADHD. For instance
he may have difficulty awaiting his turn and has the tendency of butting into
conversations or blurting out answers before questions have been completed. However
it must be remembered that all children display some of the above signs at some
point of time, so there is no need to jump to conclusions about this disorder.
Sometimes just a naughty child is wrongly supposed to have ADHD symptoms. If
the teacher of child suggests that you child is especially difficult to handle,
you need not fret. Seek an appointment with a psychiatrist and check if your
child has ADHD symptoms before you decide that your child has behavioral
issues.
Correct diagnosis of ADHD symptoms
Doctors
have often said that isolated incident of inattentiveness or hyperactivity
cannot be read as ADHD symptoms. The child has to display at least six or more
symptoms in hyperactivity or inattentiveness or impassivity before one reaches
a conclusion. Besides if any of these six ADHD symptoms have been present for
more than six months and is causing serious disruption at home or school it
requires immediate attention. If you have answered in the positive for the
above, there is no need to lose sleep over this either. ADHD is completely
curable. There is medication that is going to be prescribed for your child, but
just making him pop pills is not the solution to a problem like this. A child displaying
ADHD symptoms will require a lot of love and support at home and school.
